SHETLAND NEWS - AUGUST 2009

Part of Shetland Arts’ Creative Connections 2009, the stand up night showcased local and visiting comedic talent.

Steven Dick upped the tempo of proceedings with his mixture of stand up comedy and sleight of hand magic, amazing the audience with trick after trick. With the help of some on stage audience members he wowed the crowd using playing cards, various props and a Kiwi fruit! Steven had everyone howling with laughter and was hailed by many to be the highlight of the show.

Although all the acts got a cheer, the biggest went to Steven Dick for his outstanding performance.
The night was a huge success, and hopefully one that will be seen in Shetland again very soon.

2003 Fringe Show at Cafe Royal

COMPETING for attention with hundreds of theatre, music and comedy shows can’t be easy. To make its mark, any magic act is going to have to be, at the very least, original and entertaining.

He charms and engages, and though his performance is obviously aimed more at an adult audience, he is more than capable of meeting the needs of the youngsters present. he also has an endearing ability to belittle his own skills, while demonstrating that he is more than capable of some astounding card and coin tricks. Thank goodness for Steven Dick, the last in a quartet of magicians to appear at the Cafe Royal this Festival.

Here is a man who knows how to have a great deal of fun with his art while giving his audience a few belly laughs in the process.

Dick is a likeable Fifer who involves his audience at every stage of his presentation. There’s not a single effect in his repertoire that doesn’t require the involvement of at least one member of his packed audience.

"Do you want me to go disgusting, or clever?" he asks. When the former is requested, he answers "Good, I’m not convinced I can pull off clever."

Oh yes he can! In terms of his effects, Dick has a well-balanced set list that keeps away from the hoary old favourites and the instruction-sheet patter.

And in terms of his rapport with his audience, he hits the target every time.

GORDON RUTTER - FORTEAN TIMES

The third (and final) magician at the Café Royal was Steven Dick. Steven was definitely the most entertaining. He was very good at the effects that he did and he did have an extra buzz. Steven's character was a much more entertaining persona - his more relaxed humour made the audience instantly warm to him. Steven seemed very relaxed and comfortable with his show and it came across. Of the three (magicians I saw) he's the one I'd like to see again.

REVIEW OF EDINBURGH FRINGE SHOW - 2004

EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS

LAST year there was a plethora of magic at the festival, with an army of magicians descending on the Capital. This year, thankfully, the amateurs have stayed at home, leaving the field free for those who know what they are doing. And Steven Dick certainly knows what he is doing.

He has an easy humour and a talent with off-the cuff and up-the-sleeve remarks.

Dick is a skilled exponent of his art, and offers a level of jocular entertainment that few other magicians can match, though most would like to.

Unlike most magicians, who simply want you to acknowledge their skills, Dick recognises the fact that the audience wants to be presented with more than just a puzzle.

They want entertainment. And he is happy to meet supply that need. Of course, he employs the usual props, but he adds his own, unique banter to the mix, and he seems to genuinely like his audience. And they seem to like him

Whether performing Blockhead, in which a nail is hammered into the head, or simply teaching the kids a sneaky trick with an elastic band, Dick comes over as a warm, sparkling entertainer.

He is skilled, without pretensions, and a jolly nice person to boot. If you want to see good, uncomplicated, fun magic then this is a good place to start.
